The AI Coding Wars

Eighteen weeks of developer conversation say the race everyone watched was never close — and the runner gaining ground is not the one in the headlines.

A vermillion ram with a bell leads up a rising chart-line ridge while a grey flock descends a falling one.

The race that wasn't

Ask the headlines and the AI coding wars are a knife-fight. Ask eighteen weeks of conversation data and they have a settled front-runner: Claude Code entered February holding roughly half of all AI-coding-tool discussion across Hacker News and the developer communities we monitor, and it left May holding the same. The interesting movement is everywhere else.

The whole category is cooling from its March peak — weekly story volume across all tools has roughly halved since mid-March. Inside that decline, share is shifting: Cursor's absolute volume fell from 158 weekly stories to 69, Windsurf exited the conversation entirely, and Codex became the only tool to gain share against the tide.

Cooling twice as fast as the weather

Every community we track cooled from a March peak — attention is cyclical and the whole category is descending from its winter high. The diagnostic question is never "is it declining?" but "is it declining faster than the weather?" Cursor is. Its subreddit shed 30% of posts and 40% of comment volume between March and May; the category leader's community shed 14% over the same window, and the hobbyist baseline (r/LocalLLaMA) 25%.

The narrative record sharpens the picture. Two of Cursor's six biggest Hacker News stories this quarter were hostile technical narratives — the claim that Composer 2 is a fine-tune of a third-party model, and an academic study on code quality — and neither drew a visible counter-story. Meanwhile its biggest single attention event, the SpaceX acquisition option, decayed within days: a $60B headline could not arrest a share decline.

What to watch

Three series decide the second half. Whether Codex consolidates the #2 conversation slot it took in June. Whether Cursor's Composer 2.5 cycle — which peaked at roughly half the attention of Cursor 3 — marks shrinking launch impact or a low ebb. And whether the category's descent from the March peak flattens, which would re-rank everyone: in a smaller pool, share is the only score that matters.
